Land Rover Expedition Team to Explore Fault Line Living Reality

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

A group of British explorers will be on an expedition to uncover just how people living in known fault lines around the planet live and face up to the unremitting challenges of setting their homes in potentially catastrophic locations along some of the planet’s known fault lines.

The Brits are Serena Davis, Tamsin Davis and Adam Whitaker who have received a ₤10,000 grant and a Land Rover Defender 110 from the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) in Gaydon , UK .

The team forms part of the Fault Line Living group and is scheduled to depart August 3 from Harwick to mark the start of its epic journey beginning with Iceland and then traverse 15,000 miles to Iran , stopping by countries known to sit along the earth’s geographic fault lines.

Over a 12-week period, the team will document the issues facing the communities living on these fault lines.

Iceland is home to something like 78 earthquakes each day.  From there, the team will head to Greece, Italy, Turkey, Greece, and then to Iran  Along the chosen route, they will have the opportunity to work with local seismologists, students and select citizens in each country to investigate how the various communities learn and adapt to everyday risks they face living along these fault lines.

Tamsin Davies has this to say about the undertaking: “It’s taken months of preparation to get to this stage, and we are looking forward to getting started. Between us, we have already visited many communities that experience harsh geographical conditions on a daily basis. This expedition enables us to go beyond our existing work and create a detailed record of our experiences which we’ll share with schools and other organizations on our return.”

Dr. Rita Garner, the director of the Royal Geographical Society says that the project became a reality thanks to its 30 year partnership with the Land Rover Company.  The expedition will serve the society’s objective of promoting a “wider understanding of our world.”

Other expeditions carried out by previous award recipients include last year’s winner Atlantic Rising which is another team now navigating around the Atlantic Ocean along a 1 meter contour line that geologists forecast could be the new coastline after 100 years.

Land Rover’s partnership with the society is at the heart of its business activity which has been known to sponsor partners like the RGS-IBG.  Along with affiliate company Jaguar, the noted SUV marque is investing ₤800 million in developing sustainable technologies such as hybrid sources of power and applications for lightweight materials.  Its dedication to sustainability is seen with the manufacture of the Land Rover Defender 110 which gets carbon offset via ClimateCare running the Land Rover’s Carbon emission offset program in China , the Middle East, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and the UK .

Tata Motors Eyes New Jaguar, Land Rover Models

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

One of the largest automobile makers in the world and owner of the Jaguar and Land Rover brands of luxury vehicles, Tata Motors recently disclosed its plans for new models under the JLR brands coming out of its drawing boards.  It also plans to export some of those to the international markets while penetrating new overseas markets in the process.

The Tata Group’s board chairman Ratan Tata reveals that under the Jaguar brand, its Jaguar Land Rover Company will be introducing an entry level station wagon and a new roadster. This revelation is made by India’s largest automobile maker in terms of sales in its annual report for its fiscal year ending March 31st released only last Monday.

It should be remembered that Tata Motors bought the iconic British Jaguar and Land Rover marques from Ford Motors Co back in March 2008 for a reported $2.3 billion.

This happened amidst a developing global market meltdown that saw vehicle sales in US and European markets slump to record lows and almost closed down the big 4 Detroit car makers.  The marque was previously owned by BMW before Ford bought it in 2000.

While the first two years of the marque under Tata’s ownership proved to be a headache, with the first quarter of its preceding fiscal year well into its second year of ownership, still showing depressed market demands for the two brands.  But the last quarter of the same fiscal year extending into early 2010 showed remarkable improvements resulting in a net profit of ₤3 million ($4.7 million) for the JLR company.

The market has steadily shown signs of recovery and the increasing market demand for JLR models and the improved sales prove it, the report revealed.  It further indicated its plans to concentrate its marketing initiatives on the emerging Middle East and China markets.

The company also disclosed its plans to have the entire Land Rover SUV line revamped and has already started with a new sport utility vehicle model Evoque under the Range Rover brand.  There are also new Land Rover vehicles with more fuel efficient and hybrid engines on the drawing board.

As part of its plans, Tata Motors is setting its sights on expanding its international market presence and the company is considering putting up new manufacturing facilities overseas. An assembly plant in South Africa is expected to start operating soon for its commercial vehicles.

During the last fiscal year, Tata Motors report that its commercial vehicle exports rose moderately to 27,878 units up by 4.7% over the previous fiscal year, while its passenger vehicle exports experienced a 9.9% decline to just 6.231 units against the same period.

The company expects this numbers to improve starting this fiscal year.  Outside of the JLR brand, the company says it is working to develop model variants of its indigenous cars Indigo Manza, Indica Vista and the Nano, considered the world’s cheapest car, for international markets.

India to Assemble Land Rover Freelander

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

India’s largest automobile manufacturer Tata Motors plans to start local assembly of the Land Rover’s Freelander towards the end of 2010. Its Pimpri car manufacturing facilities near Pune is being retooled with the right machineries for assembly of the Land Rover model.  Its Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary plans to launch these locally assembled Freelanders by the middle of 2011 for the local markets.

Retrofitting the Local Factory

It was earlier learned that the same factory near Pune was being used by Mercedes Benz for assembly of some of its cars but have since transferred to its Chakan factory in Pune, leaving it free for the JLR to take over for its Freelander assembly.

Industry sources have intimated that Tata Motors is expected to begin trial assembly and production in December after investing around Rs 1.5 billion to retrofit the former Mercedes Benz factory.  The redesigned factory will have a capacity of 20 Freelanders per month but Tata Motors plan to assemble other cars under the Land Rover brand.

Industry experts are one is saying that the local assembly of the Freelander will have positive impact on its profitability to Tata Motors.  With cheaper labour cost, it means higher profit margins as the company has no plans of reducing the price tags of the local produced SUVs.

A First of its Kind

This is the first time that Jaguar Land Rover will have a local assembly plant outside of its factories in the UK.  The company remains undecided on whether to use the locally assembled Freelanders for its export markets.  But industry experts have opined this is the way to go with China as another option for its car manufacturing ventures.  Considering the increasing affluence of the Chinese middle class, there would be a much higher demand in China.  Tata Motors is seen to realize the cost benefits with imported CBU in India reaching 110% duties and taxes while CKU is only 40%.

The Freelander currently competes with the BMW X3 as well as the Audi Q5 for the mid-market segments for SUVs.  The Freelander currently has a sticker price of Rs 346,900 in Mumbai.  Domestic sales data is rather sparse by Mumbai’s Jaguar Land Rover office has sold 242 Land Rover cars for the 2009-2010 period.

It was in 2008 when Tata Motors acquired the Jaguar Land Rover marque from struggling Ford Motors. For a while, the JLR division continued to hemorrhage but the last 18 months have seen it reap significant profits as the marque reaped a 72% surge in sales in its UK markets recently.   There are currently four JLR distribution outlets in India with a recent Jaguar XJ outlet launched.

Land Rover Lease Creates S4C Scandal

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

When does a simple £1,000 a month lease on a Land Rover SUV spark some scandal?  When it’s made by a Television station that’s pleading poverty. Executives of the Welsh television channel S4C (Channel 4 Wales) went under fire from its audience after the station leased a Land Rover Discovery for its Welsh language program Cefn Gwlad.

S4C anchor man Dai Jones will be using the leased SUV for visiting farm locations for his S4C program. He also hosts a couple of other programs for the station, Rasus and Fferm Factor.   It is estimated that he makes about £185,000 annually from these programs.

An ITV Wales spokesman says that “We ensure that the most cost effective and economical ways are followed when purchasing goods and services. This was the case for the long term hire of a suitable vehicle for the services of the programme Cefn Gwlad, a countryside programme that offers challenging filming locations around Wales throughout the year.”

An Insider Comments

A station production insider called the Western Mail to say that “It is a crazy waste of money to have leased a vehicle at £1,000 a month.

It’s true Dai travels all over Wales to visit remote farms of the countryside, but that doesn’t justify leasing a Land Rover Discovery. Any car will take you to a farm. If it’s a rocky terrain, you can use farmer’s tractor.”

“S4C is pleading poverty and telling production companies they will have to tighten belts. What sort of message does this send out? They should use the money they get more wisely.”

Funding Cuts Notwithstanding

S4C funding comes directly from the Department for Culture Media and Sport in London. Since being established in 1982, the station has benefited from generous funding increases with grants tied with inflation.

But after the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition came to power last month, with Jeremy Hunt as the new Culture Secretary, there have been concerns whether its inflation-adjusted funding will continue.  S4C already took a “voluntary” funding cut of £2m for 2010, leading to speculation that the station will no longer enjoy immunity from future public sector funding cuts.

A senior TV industry insider intimated to the Western Mail: “S4C must be careful not to give the impression that it uses public funds unwisely”.

Jones, 66, was already a TV celebrity, hosting a family quiz show Siôn a Siân, when he took over the Cefn Gwlad shortly after it started airing in 1982. He also hosts a Sunday gala program for the BBC Radio Cymru, the Ar Eich Cais.  Seen as a larger than life personality, Dai Jones is also a tenor, having won the riband prize from the National Eisteddfod back in 1970.

New Range Rover LRX Spied

Friday, June 18th, 2010

It all started at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.  Tata owned Jaguar Land Rover unveiled its futuristic LRX SUV in black and white body styles that became an instant hit not only for its suave exterior aesthetics but also for a featured 2-liter hybrid diesel engine that runs on bio-diesel and promised 60 miles to a gallon which should make it a landmark in fuel efficiency.

Speculations were rife that it would carry the Range Rover name in time for the 40th anniversary of the marque on June of 2010. These were confirmed in September 2009 with the LRX concept car to be built for the Range Rover Line in time for its 2011 model year. But it is expected to debut in the Paris Show of 2010. Engineered at JLR’s Gaydon factory in the UK, the baby range Rover LRX will be its smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient SUV ever made.

It’s now the summer of 2010 and there have been spied pictures of the compact 2011 Range Rover LRX circulating online. For starters, it has a BMW-like stance that carries one of the smallest rear widows for an SUV.  They look like those earlier prototypes spotted in test circuits at Nurburgring in Germany last year.

Industry pundits confirm the authenticity of these production-grade LRX in the photos but opine that they had been angled in a perspective shot that tended to make the windows look smaller than they really are.  What is apparent from all these spy shots is that the baby Range Rover remains faithful to the concept car that disarmed car enthusiasts at the Detroit Car Show.

If these spy shots are a PR scheme from the JLR marketers, they’re doing a good job.  The excitement generated with its debut in Detroit gets spruced up anew in time for its unveiling at the Paris shoe later this year.  The forthcoming baby Range Rover is certainly as attractively sculpted as the one we saw in Detroit – a low-profile SUV-coupe crossover that exudes the usual air of snobbish elitism in a Range Rover.

A first Glimpse LRX Overview

We look forward to getting our first glimpse of the Range Rover LRX production model well in advance of its official launch at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.  Word has it that the highly anticipated SUV will have its regular sale run in the UK sometime in May next year with an MSRP of around £33,000.

The Range Rover LRX will be the first in the Land Rover stable of SUVs to have front wheel drive that would allow it to pass the stringent emission standard of 130g/km and an average fuel efficiency of 50mpg as mandated by the new “green” road rules.

But these figures apply to its 2-liter turbo-diesel engine from PSA.  A 2-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine is expected to be offered as an option but none of the V6 road monsters which are overkill for an SUV this size. Whatever happened to the promised hybrid diesel engine features in Detroit show is anyone’s guess.

Concept cars often end their lives in the drawing board but the LRX at least got off with the hybrid diesel never seeing the light of day.  Perhaps it still might in future models.

Jaguar Land Rover Goes To China

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

It was just a matter of time.  After getting a remarkable upsurge in sales of its Land Rover and Range Rover line, Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover is finally coming to its senses with plans to manufacture its vehicles in China.

Auto industry pundits have long opined that its plans to assemble car in labor-cheap China are essential in establishing Tata’s recently acquired marque as a global player in the automotive industry.

JLR currently has six automotive engineering, manufacturing and assembly plants in the UK, notably its engineering and design centers at Whitley in Coventry and in Gaydon, its Land Rover body assembly and paint shop in Halewood, two Midland factories for Land Rover in Solihull and Jaguar in Castle Bromwich and at Browns Lane in Coventry.

Earlier, there have been specializations that with the improved revenue streams of the company, the planned pull-out and closure of its UK plants in the Midlands would be reversed.  But Indian Owner, Tata Motors have been quick to pour cold water onto the speculation.  The plans has been reaffirmed only last for either its Solihull or Castle Bromwich to close with a final decision sometime next year.

Tata had bought JLR from US auto giant Ford in 2008 for ₤1.7 billion and has been losing money eversince.  Only in May did it see its investment into JLR experience a return to profitability after losing ₤280 million over the months preceding the turnaround.

JLR reported last week it made a profit before tax of ₤32 million in May which saw a 42.3% increase in sales of its Land Rover over the same month last year.  China’s performance was particularly impressive with more than a doubling of its sales over last year at 104% increase.

JLR’s Chief Executive Carl-Peter Forster had unraveled its company’s expansion plans into China while announcing the creation of 1,000 more jobs in the UK, extolling its return to profit and agreeing to sell off Browns Lane veneer factory in Coventry and pulling out of the Browns Lane factory as well.

Prof. David Bailey of the Coventry University’s Business School opined that JLR’s planned expansion into China wont’ impact on its production in the UK for as long as there’s growth in sales and they’re expanding.  He says that what is more important as that “they invest and bring in a new range of models.”

He admits that JLR simply has too many UK plants and that he would not be surprised that even if production ramps up “from 200,000 to 300,000, as they plan to do, they only need two factories in the UK.”

JLR is also planning to create 1,000 new jobs to work on the new Range Rover model to be developed at its Halewood factory in Liverpool which has 3,500 engineers while looking to close down on one of its Midlands plants. At the same, Prof Bailey opines that Carl Forster expects UK government support with the Conservative party expected to shift its tax credit to support smaller companies and with roughly ₤400 million R&D money going to the UK, JLR hopes the UK government does not cut them off.

Land Rover Defies the Global Economic Crunch with a 42% Sales Jump

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

India’s Tata Motors group has declared that its Land Rover total sales shot up to 42.3% in May against last year’s sales for the same month.  It sold 12,181 Land Rover vehicles more than what was sold in the same period last year.

A corporate press statement released this week revealed that its global markets exhibited strong sales performances compared with those of May last year. Its current sales performance for May has been improving “consistently since launching its 2010 model year line-up.”  It may have helped a lot that its new Land Rover models “are equipped with the latest, most technologically advanced and efficient features in all of Land Rover’s history.”

Its domestic market from premium utility vehicles in India contributed the largest share with sales reaching 64% growth with 3.040 units sold.  Its North American markets followed with sales climbing to 2,935 units to register a 24% sales increase.

China was next registering a phenomenal 104% increase with 2,026 units sold with Italy following with a 25.9% growth for selling 1.133 units.  Meanwhile in the UK, its Freelander 2 remains its best seller for the May with 60% sales improvement against the same period last year.  The Range Rover line-up showed the highest rate of market growth in May with a 121% increase in vehicle registration.

In addition, sales of other Land Rover vehicles like the Discovery 4 also registered increases at 84%, the Range Rover at 58% and the Defender at 32% for May 2010.

What do all these reveal?  Not that the global economic recession is over though a lot of recovery signs are being seen everywhere.  But far from it.   It only shows that the premium markets for luxury SUVs remain unperturbed by any kind of economic slowdown caused by the larger consumer markets retreating form any spending activity.  That’s because rich people remain essentially rich to go on as if nothing bad is happening around them despite middle classes losing their jobs and spending capacities.

The Land Rover name, much more that of the Range Rover, is not exactly your typical middle class or mass market product.  Mass market cars below a certain price point tend to suffer diminished sales and reflect the overall economic downturn because they are pitched to markets worst hit by the economic crisis that started in 2008.  Royalties, celebrities and the landed gentries are hardly bothered by all the woes and depressing economics around them while they continue to spend on the luxuries their money can afford.

In short, premium markets are not price sensitive. Nor are they dependent on the overall state of the economy.  Even in countries with severe economic meltdown, rich people simply import what they want or travel overseas to do their shopping.   This is one of the many things savvy brand manufacturers have long taken advantage of by coming out with upscale product lines that cater to the rich and moneyed so they remain afloat even in time of recession.

Off Road, On Road Excellence in Range Rover L322

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

After several change in ownership, the Land Rover is now with the multinational Tata Motors of India. The change in the hands did not diminish the Land Rover’s leadership when it comes to off road technology. On the other hand, it has managed to marry this tough badge with distinction in design and elegance. Balancing both aspects has been effortless for Land Rover and has successfully produced automobiles that are both powerful and beautiful.

Off Road Excellence

The Range Rover L322 comes from a family that has a history of off-road durability. Its famous brother, the Defender continues to serve military and business fleets that deal with inclement weather and unforgiving terrains. It is also said to be the Queen’s choice of wheels when she has to drive around and inspect her estate in Balmoral.

1970 marked the coming into being of the Range Rover. An off-road that is meant to also provide the comfort and elegance sought after by an emerging crop of leisure off roaders. So far, there had been three generations of the Range Rovers. The first generation vehicles are referred to as the Range Rover Classic which sports the now defunct box shaped body. The Classics are now sought after cars due to their durability and iconic status in the motoring world.

The name “P38A” was given to the second generation of Range Rovers to give it a distinction from the classics. The Range Rover L322 is the most recent and the current generation of Range Rovers. The current version is equipped with the standard off road, all wheel drive that is characteristic of Land Rover cars, as well as modern technology expected of today’s SUVs. The Range Rover’s imposing mass also exude power and safety and is substantiated by the Land Rover off road technology acquired through years of off road excellence.

On Road Elegance

The Range Rover was originally a car that is meant to work hard in off road conditions while providing comfort and style demanded by car buyers. True to its tradition, the latest Range Rover L322 is a mix of traditional off road power and modern day posh that is suitable for both the harsh roads and uptown establishments. The newest version was given a face lift with a better looking and wider car grille, rear bumper and LED head lights and tail lights.

Skin deep, the newest Range Rover L322 has two new engines that are designed to increase fuel efficiency and lessen carbon emission. It has a monocoque structural frame for easier handling as well as four corner suspension that allows ride height adjustments depending on the terrain. It runs on automatic transmission.

A touch of modernity on the dash board is evident in the liquid crystal display (LCD) in lieu of the gauges that used to grace the dashboard of older cars. An impressive multi camera system is also integrated in the interior. It gives the driver a detailed visual around the vehicle and is meant to help minimize potential accidents.

The Ultimate All Terrain Vehicle: Range Rover Sport

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

The imposing built of the Range Rover Sport belies its true nature. Like an agile athlete, it is surprisingly light footed despite its bulk. It combines posh looks with dauntless off road capabilities. Car buyers looking to project a posh image and at the same own a utility vehicle that works hard should turn to this latest Range Rover variant. The All Terrain System is its most outstanding feature but there is more to this car than you would think before reading this.

Better Engine Power

Beneath the imposing exterior and big brother look, the Range Rover Sport is closer to the Discovery. Like the Discovery, it has a monocoque chassis and double wishbone suspension that accounts for better ride and more manageable driving. The latest of the Range Rovers has a 242 bhp 3.0 liter twin turbo diesel engines.

These were developed in house with partner company, Jaguar. With this horsepower underneath, the Range Rover no longer have to play second fiddle to other bands dominating the SUV market.

The diesel make utilizes sequential turbochargers that provide smoothly flowing power and torque by delivering a huge 500Nm from idle and 600Nm when it gets going. The gas engine pumps 625Nm aided by its twin-vortex supercharger and advanced variable camshaft timing system. Both engines are considered to be among the best power generators in the world today.

Truly All Terrain

The Range Rover Sport also features a six speed automatic gearbox that has been improved to facilitate faster shifting and take advantage of the better engine torque that is generated by the latest models. The gearbox also has an intelligent Sport mode that adapts to driving styles of users. The Adaptive Dynamics System continually optimizes the settings according to road conditions to achieve the best possible degree of comfort. So if you want a car that is good on road and works hard off road, the Range Rover Sport is for you.

It has the standard Terrain Response System that helps to get the best out of the vehicle as it cruises whether on road or off road. Having this is like having a driving expert sitting beside you as you drive. There are five terrain settings to choose from via a rotary knob.

One is for general diving condition which you commonly use when driving leisurely. When the driving gets tough, there is one for slippery conditions dubbed as “Grass/Gravel/Snow”, then there three off road situations called “Mud and Ruts”, “Sand” and “Rock Crawl”.  Now, here’s a truly all terrain vehicle from Land Rover.

Love the Environment

Environmental concerns need not be a reason to forego the joys of leisurely driving. Land Rover made sure that you get a very efficient engine given the Range Rover Sport’s size and capabilities. The 3.0 liter engine drives at 30 miles per gallon (mpg) and with CO2 emissions of 243g/km. The 5.0 liter variant is less thrifty at 39 mpg and emits 353 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Urban Luxury Meets Countryside Toughness: The Land Rover Discovery

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

A mid – SUV with the legendary power known in Land Rover trucks, the Land Rover Discovery is an off-road that you can trot in the metropolis without shame. All four generations of the Discovery, the latest of which is nicknamed the LR4, is known for its toughness and elegance.

Discovery Series 1

The first Land Rover Discovery Series 1 was launched in 1989. It has a big body in the tradition of the Land Rover’s 4 x 4 cars. It had problems with the engine though as some variants offer 2.0L engines to take advantage of British and Italian taxation incentives for 2 and under cars.

Following problems with such engine unable to support such a big bodied car, additional units were fitted with more powerful diesel and petrol engines. This of course increased fuel costs, contrary to the original intent of providing an alternative to Japan made and cheap SUVs.

But the best thing about the Discovery Series 1 is suppose to be its design. When the project was conceived, special attention was given to the exterior and interior design in order to come up with a handsome model that is also powerful and reliable. However impressive the add-ons are, the Discovery Series 1’s interior remained utilitarian over-all, though it could be considered a major drift from the better known Land Rover Defender.

Discovery Series 2

Land Rover Discovery Series 2 showed major changes when it was introduced in 1998. It came with 2.5 L 300TDi 4-cylinder and 3.9 Rover V8 engines. Models with diesel engines had the 249 cc TD5 (a 5 cylinder in-line direct-injected engine) in line with the new Defender models.

These electronically managed engines run more smoothly and produce more power at lower revs compared to its predecessors. Manual transmission models were also fitted with stronger R380 gearboxes for added comfort. Over-all, the Discovery Series 2 come in as more economical, powerful and with a less utilitarian look inside and out.

Discovery Series 3

Until the release of the Discovery Series 3, the Land Rover Discovery remains as an equipment rather than a car for showing off. It is the top choice of many off roaders and those whose occupation demand a high torque and durable car rather than a stylish and suave drive.

With Discovery, a major face lift is evident and the Land Rover Discovery was transformed from just a heavy – duty off road into a powerful yet cool ride. Land rover came out with a new method to produce an integrated body frame. This does not only render the car stronger.

It resulted into a better sculpted body that is pleasant to the eye. As performance, endurance and durability is no longer an issue with Land Rover cars, the handsome look that the Discovery Series 3 sports is clearly the added value in this third generation Discovery.

A special Discovery was also unveiled that features a B6 ballistic level of protection, side blast and under floor grenade protection and wheels fitted with run-flat tire system. Not that there is a high demand for such anti-ballistics but this goes to show that despite the face lift, Land Rover remains true to its roots of being an all-weather and all-terrain toughie.

Discovery 4

And now comes the Land Rover Discovery 4. It is strikingly handsome and packs a lot of horsepower, equal, if not better than its predecessors. Major electronic add-ons are present as the discovery sheds off its extreme off roadability to give way to good road manners and comfort. It still is the Land over you know and love only it is given a  major facelift and accommodates all known modernity in car making technology for a more comfortable ride.
